Today we went to the Brodick Highland games on the island. This event features various sporting events and festival activities. Several people make a special trip to Arran for it. Many brought their family and dog along to enjoy the fun festive event, The original predicted forecast today was rain, but fortunately the rain held off until after the event was over.

The Festival

Patrons can enjoy festive foods, locally made alcohol, traditional Scottish dress, dancing  all while being serenaded with the traditional music. There also a lot of carnival games, swings, slides, and bounce houses for the children.

Games

The highland games have various running competitions for adults and kids of all ages. The main games consist of a group of men that compete in several events. Some of their competitions that I found really interesting were:
Picture
Hammer Toss

Hammer Toss

Objective: To toss the large heavy hammer the farthest.

They made it looks so easy as they threw the large hammer across the field.

Weight Over the Bar

Weight Over the Bar

Objective: To throw a weight over one's head and clear the highest height.

This event made me nervous as they threw it up over their heads. One misjudge could lead to disaster.

They were throwing these weights like they weighed nothing. It was crazy!

Stone Put

Stone Put

Objective: To toss the heavy weight the farthest.

This event was the closest to the American's track and field version of shot put.

Caber Toss

Objective: To toss the pole the farthest, but it must flip at least one time.

I thought this was the most entertaining event at the games. It's very impressive to see how them lift these huge poles and throw them.

It was a little strange to me seeing these big macho men with tattoos participating in these events wearing kilts.

Along with the interesting sporting games there are also other music and dance competition too. It was a great fun experience attending the Brodick Highland games.
